Independent Commission For Peoples Rights & Development
In the period of economic reform and globalization, while India’s nuclear capacity has evoked much interest in the West, the inequities of caste, class, religion seem exacaberated without systematic distribution of resources to the poor, women and vulnerable. This has tended to heighten identities (minorities, tribal, women, caste) which has often lead to conflict for resources i.e without proper delivery of services to the poorest of India who have no access to other forms of social security (available in the West) (around 250 million poor live in India).
The Independent Commission for People’s Rights and Development has since the last 10 years through building alliances with multi-party MPs in India (70 no.s) (in SAARC 11 MPs), national coalitions of around 900 small NGOs in 21 States of India, regional and national media, policy makers, academicians, opinion makers and citizens to demonstrate that “the most crucial requirement is “to generate pressure and demand of the Government that large financial resources allocated for the poor by the government reach them-- as well as pro-poor policies to protect them during the period of economic reform. Unless this is undertaken,, communal / caste / youth riots due to unemployment, widespread poverty, growing inequity, development denial will lead to conflict, civil strife and destabilize the governance process. Deepening democracy through exposing political executives to development realities; and dialogue of the poor with governance processes is also vital for National development”.
ICPRD has had the current Hon’ble President of India, Hon’ble Prime Minister’s Commendation of its gender training, participation of Home Minister, Deputy Chairperson – Planning Commission, in its varied meetings.
ICPRD has taken action in three niche areas towards harmonizing the reform process with poverty reduction. These are:
• Policy Advocacy• Mobilization at the grassroots• Capacity Building• Training Technologies and Aids• Action/Attitudinal Research• Coalition Building and Network Development
600 events have been taken up in the last 10 years. 10,000 policy makers, 70,000 stakeholders, 5000 poor and tribal women approximately have been reached through these activities.
