The NUS Department of the Built Environment (DBE) was created on 1 July 2021 after a rebranding of the Department of Building (DOB). The DOB was originally established on 1 June 2000 when the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Real Estate was restructured as the School of Design and Environment (SDE). The Department has more than 50 years of history and traces its roots to the Department of Building and Estate Management that was formed in 1969. The DBE now sits as one of the 10 Departments of the recently set-up NUS College of Design and Engineering as a result of the merger of SDE and the Faculty of Engineering starting in 2022.
This departmental rebranding heralds the dawn of a new era which firmly anchors the department at the forefront of Built Environment education and research. This rebranding serves to future-proof our educational offerings to transcend beyond the traditional notions of building, project, and facilities management. This thereby ensures that our graduates remain highly sought-after by the relevant industries.
The DBE offers the undergraduate programmes Bachelor of Engineering (Infrastructure and Project Management) as well as Bachelor of Science (Project and Facilities Management). The DBE also offers taught and research postgraduate programmes such as the Master of Science (Building Performance and Sustainability), the Master of Science (Project Management), and Doctor of Philosophy/Master of Science (Built Environment).
