The independent society Hanseatic Model United Nations (HanseMUN) was founded almost 17 years ago, in 1996, by students from the University of Hamburg, in order to give young people the chance to look into the mechanisms of the United Nations and inspire them for the organizations aims. Today, the debates also include simulations of the European Parliament, the Non-Aligned Movement or the Association of South East Asian Nations.
During our weekly sessions at the University, we encourage other students to dig into global issues such as resource governance, global security, migration flows, regional conflicts, etc. and motivate them to educate themselves in a practical and interdisciplinary way. Every year, we attend several international conferences: In 2013, we sent ‘delegations’ to OsloMUN (Norway), NMUN (USA), EuroMUN (Netherlands) and IsraMUN (Israel) and other conferences in Germany. Every year, we host our own conference – HamMUN – the largest UN simulation in Germany.
