LFC’s mission is promote social and economic justice using the three pillars of Digital Equity: Ownership of technology, stable high-speed internet access, and the foundational digital skills to use modern computer technology effectively and safely. Since 2009, LFC has been working to help individuals and families across Monterey County overcome the digital and economic divides by providing no-to-low-cost computer systems, digital literacy classes, hands-on technology workshops, and technology assistance/computer repair service. We focus on low income individuals, families, seniors, veterans, children, people with disabilities and partnering with likeminded like-mission nonprofit organizations, while providing a wide variety of interns and volunteers with an encouraging and gratifying place to learn about Digital Equity, Computer Science, and Information Technology for their lives, education, and careers.
LFC is the only organization in our region that addresses digital equity and inclusion through its programs and services, which include low-to-no-cost computing devices, digital fluency instruction, tech support and repair, and workforce development opportunities. Our region’s needs for LFC’s programs and services continue to increase as broadband infrastructure is deployed to rural and urban areas, and as more individuals are dependent upon computing devices and skills.
Over the last 15 years, LFC has provided almost 15,000 computers, taught approximately 1,000 digital literacy classes and workshops, and impacted more than 55,000 low-income, underserved people throughout Monterey County. We remain committed to help those whose education, race, age, employment, geographic location, gender, and income have marginalized them at the low end of the “digital divide.”
LFC received resolutions honoring its work from the State Legislature, Salinas City Council, and Congress! LFC was distinguished as the PGA’s 2022 National Charity of the Year!
