Hijos del Sol empowers youth through accessible arts experiences that foster creativity, emotional well-being, and skill development. We provide free studio space, art supplies, professional instruction, and support for everyone.
We operate as an experimental arts collective, providing resources and space for young artists to flourish. Our studio is open to all, with structured open hours and opportunities for collaboration with professionals. We emphasize mutual respect and co-creation, fostering a sense of community among participants.
Mission: Hijos del Sol creates opportunities, inspires children and youth, and builds community in the Salinas Valley through visual and multicultural arts education, experiences, and mentorship, where young people are respected, develop artistic and life skills, and explore and embrace their cultural identities.
Overview: Hijos del Sol addresses critical community issues in East Salinas, an area ranking in the lowest quartile of the California Healthy Places Index. The program provides a haven where youth can safely and freely express themselves, fostering creativity and emotional well-being.
Hijos del Sol, meaning "Children of the Sun," embodies a philosophy of interconnectedness and sharing. We are celebrating 30 years! Established in 1994 by Native American and Latino migrant artists in East Salinas, our award-winning organization has been recognized by colleagues, officials, and the community for our impactful programming, rooted in providing accessible arts experiences for youth.
