Welcome. Moree Plains Shire is located in northwest New South Wales near the Queensland border. In fact, one town in our Shire (Mungindi) straddles both the New South Wales and Queensland borders. To put things in perspective, by road, Moree is about 5 hours' drive from Brisbane and about 8 hours' drive from Sydney. But don't despair if those journeys seem long, we also have regular week day flight services to both cities.
And yes, agriculture is a big part of life on the Plains - our Shire is home to hundreds of thousands of hectares of prime agricultural land, farmed by Australia's most innovative producers.
But the Plains is also a place you can live 5 minutes from work (and schools) (and shops) (and parks) (and sporting grounds); parking in the CBD is free; you'll actually know your neighbours' names and the closest thing to a traffic jam is queuing for a coffee at one of our local cafes.
Here at Council, we look after a lot of important things for our community - we maintain roads, look after rubbish (as well as recycling and organic waste), organise events, provide facilities including the Moree Artesian Aquatic Centre, assist tourists and plan for the future. We know what a great place Moree Plains Shire is today and the pride and the passion we all feel in being part of this community now and into the future.
