Urban Alliance was founded in Kalamazoo, Mich., in 1999 with the mission to build meaningful relationships and connections with the area’s marginalized community members. After relentlessly pounding the pavement, Urban Alliance received its non-profit status in 2006 and has worked to expand its relationships and capabilities ever since. The organization, or movement as it is seen by team members, provides a vital purpose, creating opportunities for marginalized individuals to embrace their talents and potentials, learn skills, gain confidence, and be seen. Through different initiatives focused on outreach, community development, workforce development, and the cultivation of relationships, Urban Alliances works to transform society and the systems that have oppressed or disregarded marginalized community members, while also actively striving to educate and transform mainstream society, shifting the narrative and perception of who is deemed as valuable.
