At Story Factory, our mission is to enrich the lives of young people from under-resourced communities through creative writing and storytelling.
Reading is access, but writing is agency - without strong writing skills, young people cannot actively engage in their education. Each week, our expert Storytellers and trained volunteer tutors work with close to one thousand young people aged 7 to 17 in our creative writing programs, increasing their motivation to learn, improving their writing skills and expanding their future prospects.
We work exclusively with the young people who can most benefit from our support. All students are from under-resourced communities, and we have a particular focus on working with young people in Western Sydney, young people who are Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander, and those who speak English as an Additional Language or Dialect. All programs are free for young people.
From centres in Redfern and Parramatta, we run programs in partnership with schools and community organisations across Sydney, Western Sydney and virtually across Australia.
Independent evaluations consistently demonstrate positive impacts for participating students, including improved academic outcomes, increased motivation to write and greater confidence in what they are capable of.
Since 2012 we've taken 45,000+ student enrolments. Of these, 17% of our students are Indigenous and 44% are from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
