The Pentland Floating Offshore Wind Farm (PFOWF) is a 100-MW development key to advancing the deployment of large-scale floating offshore wind in the UK and globally.
When completed in 2026, it will be the world’s largest floating offshore wind farm. It’s being developed off the coast of Dounreay, Caithness in Scotland and will be capable of providing clean energy to approximately 70,000 homes, equivalent to around 65% of homes in the Highlands local council area.
The challenging environment of the Pentland Firth provides ideal testing conditions to demonstrate new floating wind technologies – a core aim of the project. This will offer learnings to inform the development of future floating offshore wind projects in the UK (such as ScotWind, INTOG and Celtic Sea) and the deployment of floating offshore wind globally, while contributing to building a strong local and national supply chain for the industry.
