The idea for Latino Youth for Higher Education Program (LYHEP) was born out of our own experiences as immigrants, sons and daughters of immigrants, who may have encountered the same obstacles and difficulties that Latin kids experience today with entering college. The lack of resources and mainly the lack of knowledge available to the kids about their possibilities are some of the main issues which our of our concern.
Program vision:
Our goal is to empower and enable the students with the knowledge and necessary tools in order to facilitate and make college a reality through the following means:
The College Process:
We will provide students with all the necessary tools and aid needed to begin the college process. Beginning with the most preliminary information on what they need to know, how to get started, applications, financial aide, scholarships, and following to study habits, time management and learning skills, regardless of immigration status.
Socialization:
Create an integration between parents, students and teachers in order to provide a support system for the students. Enable parents with the knowledge, exposure and understanding about different career paths and the college process. It is essential for parents to understand and know their options in order to empower their kids and work together with them toward accomplishing this goal, through parent sponsored social events, career fairs, and college visits.
Extracurricular Activities:
Students need to be exposed to a series of multicultural , positive and encouraging environments in order to facilitate their adaptation to new cultures and immerse them into new fields of study or possible future careers.
