The Ethiopian Community Development Council, Inc. (ECDC), headquartered in Arlington, Va., is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit established in 1983. The organization was formed initially to help refugees and asylum seekers from Ethiopia but it quickly expanded to serve African refugees, and now works with refugees from all over the world. ECDC is one of nine organizations that contracts with the U.S. Department of State to deliver the refugee reception and placement program and has resettled more than 60,000 refugees in the United States from countries around the world since fiscal year 1991. ECDC and its affiliate network of ethnic community-based organization (ECBO) embody the cultural, ethnic, and linguistic diversity of the refugee communities it works with and represents. ECDC promotes refugee integration, stability, and self-sufficiency through a range of programs at local and national levels. Building on its experience, ECDC continues to develop innovative approaches that respond to the needs of newcomers and increase awareness about refugee and newcomer issues at home and abroad.
