The art of embellishing garments to make them unique goes back to ancient times. Shanagar, which in Sanskrit means to ‘adorn’, was started in 1955 by the Desai family with a focus on handmade embroidery and embellishment.
In 1994, under the new management of second-generation brothers Chetan and Anirudh Desai, the company had a more international focus, with the intent of working with top creative and luxury fashion houses. Attention to fine detailing, maintaining high-quality standards, constant R&D with new materials and techniques, and the ability to work towards a customer's specifications helped Shanagar work with some of the best names in the fashion world, including Azzedine Alaïa, Donna Karan, Yohji Yamamoto, Alberta Ferretti, Chloe, Lanvin, and Armani, amongst others. Today, this same commitment to high-quality luxury embroidery is supported by a team of 500 artisans, designers, and merchandisers.
The company’s vast experience in understanding current trends and translating them into fine luxury embroidery has led the company to keep working with some of the most creative names in the fashion world, including Ferretti and Dsquared.
