SOCEUR traces its lineage to January 22, 1955, when a headquarters known as Support Operations Command Europe was established in Paris, France. This headquarters was responsible for providing peacetime planning and operational control of SOF conducting unconventional warfare in the USEUCOM AOR. The headquarters was reorganized as a joint task force within USEUCOM on May 4, 1955 and re-designated as Support Operations Task Force Europe (SOTFE). SOTFE headquarters transferred from Paris to Panzer Kaserne near Stuttgart, Germany on January 9, 1967.
To clarify SOTFE's role with other agencies, Support Operations Task Force Europe was redesignated Special Operations Task Force Europe effective September 1, 1978 and assigned to USEUCOM at Patch Barracks, Stuttgart-Vaihingen, Germany. SOTFE was redesignated Special Operations Command Europe (SOCEUR) on November 1, 1985 and established as a subordinate unified command of USEUCOM on May 30, 1986.
