Harmony School of Music launched in 2017 to provide youth development programs in Cedar Rapids, regardless of ability to pay. Harmony School began as a Suzuki-based music school with need-based scholarships available. While searching for the best way to reach children in need, director Jessica Altfillisch discovered El Sistema, a Venezuelan music program that transformed education in that nation. Our first free program launched in September 2017 in partnership with Johnson STEAM Academy. Students met three times per week after school; Harmony School, Johnson PTA, and donors provided instruments, materials, and instruction. Current programming includes El Sistema, infant/parent music classes, Suzuki lessons, and free community outreach events. Enrollment has grown by 25% in its first two years of operation; 40% of these students receive financial assistance.
