The Saint is an award-winning newspaper written and run by students at the University of St Andrews. We are the only news publication in St Andrews to go to print, with a fortnightly run of 1,200 copies. We operate as an independent company, The Saint Student Newspaper Ltd., which owns both The Saint and its digital counterpart, The Saint Online, and generates its own revenue in order to fund printing through advertising. This allows us to maintain complete financial and editorial independence from the Students’ Association and the University as a whole, and we are proudly one of only a handful of student newspapers in the country to be in this position. The Saint is only the latest rendition of in-print student journalism in St Andrews, which can, in some form or other, be traced back to 1962. Printing and distributing every Wednesday at the Students’ Union, Aien (taken from the University’s motto when it was still written in Greek, aien aristeuein) enjoyed a twenty-two-year run. The Saint, at least as we know it, first appeared in 1984, at which point it was published under the name The St Andrews Chronicle. In 1997, Tim Samuels took the reigns, having served as The Chronicle’s Features editor and, branding the newspaper decidedly “dull”, decided to re-brand as The Saint. Since then, the paper itself has gone on to win multiple awards, including Student Newspaper of the Year from The Herald (in 1998 & 2003), the Guardian (2003 & 2004), and most recently the Student Publication Association (2018). Today, we continue in print form, publishing ten issues per academic year, in addition to a magazine in Freshers’ Week and supplementary content online over the course of the year, including where possible, during the university holidays. Every second Thursday, our staff, which consists of (primarily undergraduate) students undertaking their roles alongside full-time degrees, can be found distributing the paper outside Rector’s Cafe, St. Mary’s, or Main Library.
