Arion Press is a publisher of fine limited edition artist books, based in San Francisco, California. Books are illustrated by prominent artists, printed by letterpress, and hand bound by artisans. Designated by the National Trust for Historic Preservation as an “irreplaceable cultural treasure,” its facility is the last complete, fully integrated type foundry, letterpress workshop, and book bindery in the United States.
Founded by Andrew Hoyem in 1974, the Arion Press carries on
the legacies of the British Arts & Crafts movement associated with
William Morris, and the French livres d’artistes tradition popularized
by art dealer Ambroise Vollard over a century ago. Hoyem guided
the Press to produce over 100 titles until his retirement in 2018.
Today, under the direction of Rolph Blythe, the Press continues
to collaborate with leading contemporary artists to create lasting,
collectible works that are by turns relevant and challenging to the
contemporary moment.
