Sail Beyond Cancer Annapolis provides free, three-hour, private sails for cancer patients, their caregivers, and loved ones. These special sailing excursions create opportunities for those being challenged by cancer to rebuild courage and make lasting memories. Anyone in treatment for any type of cancer, regardless of their age, income level, ethnic background, or other life circumstances is eligible to come sailing with us.
No matter where on the continuum of health and terminal disease a cancer patient’s prognosis may fall, the diagnosis of cancer and the treatments that follow bring with them commonly occurring experiences for the patient: stress, anxiety, depression, and unease. Our respite sails bring people together and help ease the stresses, fears, and unknowns that cancer brings to an entire family.
Our sails are conducted by experienced volunteer captains and trained crew on our donated vessel, a 35’ Pearson sloop and other private yachts. In 2022, we conducted 26 mission sails and took more than 130 individuals sailing on the Chesapeake Bay. As a result of our increased outreach, in 2023 we anticipate conducting more than 50 respite sails and expect to take out more than 300 passengers.
SBCA is unique in bringing diverse cancer patients, caregivers, and their families together on private respite sails. By ‘casting off the lines,’ these sails help patients enjoy their loved ones and feel ‘cancer free’ for a time. Their written testimonials document the profound impact these sails have on them and their loved ones.
