Cathedral Square is recognized nationally for our high-quality, affordable, service-enriched housing communities for older adults and people with special needs. Founded in 1977 in Burlington, Vermont, our nonprofit organization is dedicated to advancing “healthy homes, caring communities and positive aging” throughout Vermont and beyond our borders.
We have 25 affordable-housing communities in Chittenden and Franklin counties, each uniquely designed to provide safe and secure apartments at affordable rents, and we help community groups throughout Vermont develop, preserve and enhance affordable-housing communities.
More than 1,200 Vermonters live in Cathedral Square independent, shared or assisted-living homes. In 2017 we created Vermont’s first affordable memory-care residence, which serves Medicaid recipients with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. We currently have more than 800 people on waiting lists for our properties.
As a leading advocate for a system that better serves the long-term care needs of Vermonters, Cathedral Square created and administers the statewide Support and Services at Home (SASH) program. SASH is a partnership among regional affordable-housing organizations, agencies on aging, hospitals and providers of home health, mental health and primary care services. Working together under the SASH umbrella, these organizations coordinate care and support for Vermonters throughout the state so they can remain living at home independently.
