Founded in Waltham, Massachusetts in 1977, Middlesex Human Service Agency, Inc. (MHSA) is the product of humble roots and an enduring mission: to help those in need while emphasizing dignity, respect and empowerment. From a single drug and alcohol detoxification program in the 1970s, MHSA has grown into a multifaceted agency with 10 high-impact programs throughout Waltham, Boston and the Metro Boston area. Together, MHSA team members strive to create a supportive network of shelter, recovery and nutrition services for deserving families and individuals throughout Massachusetts.
MHSA currently operates one of the Commonwealth’s largest emergency family shelter programs, in addition to a Waltham-based family shelter and two long-running individual homeless shelters for adult men and women. MHSA’s two substance abuse recovery homes provide intensive, six-month programming for those in recovery, while MHSA’s DUIL program offers critical substance abuse education and treatment instead of incarceration for repeat-OUI offenders. In additional to the nutritional support offered to participants at various MHSA programs, MHSA’s soup kitchen, food pantry and mobile food market also connect community members with thousands of nutritious meals each year.
While MHSA’s programs may differ in size and scope, each operates as an innovator and partner at all times, promoting the health, safety and independence of the 1,000 clients served by MHSA each day. With a dedicated team of over 200 employees and an engaged community of more than 2,000 volunteers and community partners, MHSA is funded through a combination of State contracts, grants and charitable donations. MHSA is governed by a Board of Directors, with organizational and programmatic oversight from a deeply-experienced Administrative Team.
