Durham County Council is made up of an elected assembly of 126 councillors accountable to over 513,000 people in County Durham. We are responsible for providing a wide range of public services to the people of the county.
We also represent and promote the interests of County Durham when dealing with regional, national and international affairs. Through effective local government, Durham County Council allows local people to look after their own affairs and to decide how and where money is best spent in their area.
Our powers and responsibilities are determined by Parliament with county council elections held every four years. The most recent election was held in May 2017.
With a strong culture and committed, enthusiastic people, our council is a fantastic place to work. We want our workforce to truly reflect the communities that we are here to serve and want our workplaces to be the spaces where our people thrive. Our ambitions can only be realised with great people who bring their individual skills, knowledge and expertise, but above all, they bring the commitment needed to help us make a real difference.
We offer a fantastic range of rewards and benefits including generous annual leave entitlement, smarter/hybrid working, access to wellbeing services, learning and development opportunities and many more.
We currently employ over 18,000 people across a broad range of service areas, including street lighting, libraries, leisure facilities, education, housing and more. Take a look at our current vacancies - https://www.durham.gov.uk/jobsandcareers
