Established in 1969, The Academy is a small, independent K-8 school in Berkeley, CA. We are dedicated to developing thoughtful, ambitious, and deep learners through a rigorous, classical education in a nurturing community.
At The Academy, we embrace the Socratic method, encouraging critical thinking and active dialogue. Our students build knowledge through experience, evidence, and collaborative learning, gaining confidence and problem-solving skills. Our curriculum is rooted in classical education, inspired by the traditions of ancient Greece and Rome. We emphasize the trivium stages—grammar, logic, and rhetoric—along with classical languages and great works of literature, fostering intellectual development and critical thinking.
With small class sizes averaging 12-15 students, we promote meaningful relationships and a supportive environment where students feel comfortable expressing their beliefs and refining their ideas. The Academy transitioned to a nonprofit in 2014, supported by a dedicated group of parents and teachers. We are proud of our diverse community, with 63% students of color and 80% of our faculty holding advanced degrees. Our student-to-teacher ratio is 6:1, ensuring personalized attention and support.
Our motto, Omnia praeclara tam difficilia quam rara sunt—"Everything excellent is as difficult as it is rare"—reflects our commitment to excellence in education. Join us in nurturing the potential of each student and preparing them to thrive in a complex world.
