Sichuan University - Pittsburgh Institute (SCUPI) is a newly institute cooperated by Sichuan University (SCU) and the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt). Located in Chengdu, China, SCUPI is one of the institute-scale, collaborative entities between leading universities in the U.S. and China, including joint institutes of the University of Michigan-Shanghai Jiaotong University, and Carnegie Mellon University-Sun Yat Sen University. The SCUPI stands out for its technical focus on advanced, sustainable manufacturing. On the educational front, SCUPI will initiate three undergraduate majors in Industrial Engineering (IE), Mechanical Engineering (ME), and Materials Science and Engineering (MSE), following the Swanson School of Engineering’s core curriculum. Initial enrollment of 100 students is anticipated for Fall 2015 with an initial faculty of ten to provide the equivalent of the Swanson School’s freshman curriculum. Within seven years, enrollment is projected to reach a steady state of 1600 students with a faculty of approximately 80 members. All courses will be taught in English. SCUPI will have a new building to be constructed on Sichuan University’s international campus in Chengdu, Sichuan. The building will house state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities and provide students with active and innovative learning experience.
