Sumo Coal (Pty) Ltd, an established South African company, has been operating in the coal industry since its inception in 1995. Some of the company's subsidiaries are in drilling and exploration, coal mining, beneficiating and marketing companies. Sumo owns a coal preparation plant for which operations and maintenance work has been outsourced to E+PC Metallurgical Operations (A Division of E+PC Engineering & Projects Company).
The company has a coal portfolio in South Africa, with an operating mine situated in the known Highveld coalfield in Middleburg, Mpumalanga Province. Sumo has built its portfolio around the area to achieve economies of scale. In close proximity to the mine are two rail sidings, namely Rietkuil and Pan, which serve trains en-route for Maputo, Durban and Richards Bay.
As part of its growth strategy, the company has successfully formed other business entities, operating independently, and thus optimize the mining value-chain. All its subsidiaries are involved in the building of Sumo into a global mining resources company.
Sumo is committed to nurturing broadly-based Black Economic Empowerment initiatives and complies with the provisions of the Mining Charter. The commitment will ensure Sumo makes a meaningful and sustainable contribution to the communities around its operations. Part of the company's social and labour upliftment programme has identified the need to build a school in a targeted area as it promotes education to young people, in addition to its existing social investment scheme.
