The iconic Joseph Holt brewery was first established in Manchester in 1849. After a successful start at two smaller breweries in the city centre, Joseph Holt and his ever-supportive wife Catherine, moved their fledging brewery to Empire Street in 1860, the very same spot where we stand and brew today.
We’re a fiercely independent family brewer, now in our sixth generation of Holt descendants. We’ve just celebrated 173 years of brewing, as well as running 127 North West pubs and over 500 independent accounts nationally.
We’re passionate about our beers and cask ales, and our brewery has the honour of being one of only a handful across the world to have won 5 gold medals at the prestigious International Brewing Awards.
We’ve recently been honoured with the National Pub Aid award for our support and commitment to the community, in addition to receiving the Heart of the Community award from the British Beer and Pub Association a record three times. Our family brewery has a long and rich history of supporting charities and have donated a significant amount over the years. Back in 1932, the Holt Radium Institute joined forces with the Christie Hospital to establish one of the world’s leading cancer hospitals. Since then we’ve maintained a close relationship with the Christie Hospital, raising over £150,000 for them in 2019.
