The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (LASD) is the nation's largest Sheriff's Department and second largest policing agency in the United States. The LASD's nearly 18,000 budgeted personnel include nearly 10,000 budgeted sworn sheriff's deputies and 8,000 professional staff (civilians). Adding to the full time personnel are 840 reserve sheriff's deputies, over 400 youth explorers, and 3,500+ civilian volunteers (totaling about 5,000 community volunteers). The LASD annual budget is approximately $2.5 billion dollars.
The LASD is the policing agency for 130 unincorporated communities within the 4,000+ square miles of the County of Los Angeles. As the largest contract policing agency in the nation, the LASD is the sole policing agency for 42 of 88 cities in LA County, 10 community colleges, and over one million daily commuters of Metrolink and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority trains and buses. Over 4 million people are directly protected by the LASD.
The LASD also protects 42 Superior Courts and 600 bench officers. Moreover, the Department manages the nation's largest local jail system with a housing capacity of nearly 20,000 inmates. The Sheriff of Los Angeles County is the Director of Homeland Security-Mutual Aid for California Region I, which includes the County of Orange. Region I serves 13 million people.
