Qatar Biobank has been created by Qatar Foundation in collaboration with Hamad Medical Corporation and Ministry of Public Health, with the expert support of scientists from Imperial College London to enable medical research on health issues that prevail in Qatar.
Through its collection of samples and information on the health and lifestyles of large numbers of Qatar’s population, Qatar Biobank will be a driving force in developing research into the risk-factors for obesity and related diseases, such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer, which are major health challenges for the Qatari population. The health information and samples collected by Qatar Biobank on the population of Qatar will allow researchers to better understand diseases that affect our communities and will lead to tailored healthcare and personalized medicines.
Announced by Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Chairperson of Qatar Foundation during the World Innovation Summit on Health (WISH) 2013, the Qatar Genome Programme which is currently in its pilot phase is an initiative that uses collection of samples and information housed at Qatar Biobank to perform a comprehensive analysis of Qatari genomes enabling the development of personalized healthcare through the implementation of precision medicine measures.
