Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering and Technology (SLIET), Longowal, was established by Ministry of Human Resource and Development, Government of India in the year 1989. Since then marching ahead, recently SLIET, achieved 56th Rank in the year 2016 by NIRF-MHRD-GOI.
Today the Institute enjoys its status at par with NITs, IIMs, Central Universities and other CFTIs.
The Food Engineering and Technology department at SLIET is a premier institute in north india to offer specialized education in Food Engineering & Technology. The department provides 4-degree courses namely, diploma, B.Tech, M.Tech and PhD in Food Engineering and Technology.
The course trains the students in the chemical, biochemical, safety & regulatory, operational & management, engineering and microbial aspects of foods. The course gives adequate engineering inputs for large-scale production. The training also includes developing food products, manufacturing processes, and industrial design with proper quality assurance systems established.
There are many current research projects going on of which few interests include Honey Characterization and other bee products ,starch chemistry and technology with a focus on Indian traditional foods; and food microbiology related to quality, safety, and application of new technology, non-thermal treatment of food products for their stability, micro and nanoencapsulation of bioactive compounds , development of novel and products for enhancement of gastronomic experiences and many more.
