Officially founded in 1954 by Bliss H. Crandall—now widely known as the “father of computerized dairy records”—DHI began as a family business operated out of the basement of the Crandall home in Logan, Utah. Bliss, then Assistant Director of the Statistical Laboratory at Utah State University, combined with Lyman Rich to develop the first system to automate the processing of dairy management records using IBM punched card equipment and tabulators. News of the innovative system spread throughout the dairy industry, and DHI quickly became the premiere choice in processing dairy records for herds throughout the United States. The Crandall family and business moved to Provo, Utah in 1955 where they chose to set their long-term roots. DHI continued to excel and became known as “Utah Valley’s Original High-tech Company”. In 1964, its reputation generated interest from members of the banking industry who approached DHI about processing financial data. And, shortly thereafter, a Salt Lake City medical clinic requested medical data services. As a result, DHI reorganized as a parent company (DHI Computing Service, Inc.) and created specific divisions to serve each of the different industries. In 2006, DHI added another division to support its growing clientele in the consumer finance arena.
