The first trials of broadcasting of programmes were started in Riga already in October 1925, but only on the 1st of November with a broadcast of opera "Madame Butterfly" the Riga Radio centre of the Department of Latvian Post and Telegraph was opened officially.
At present Radio Latvia provides 6 different programmes that are transmitted 24 hours a day, on mobile applications and via internet. Two of the programs – „Latvijas Radio 1” and „Latvijas Radio 2” – are heard in the whole territory of Latvia. Radio has more than 260 employees in total.
Since 1th January 1993 Radio Latvia is active member of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).
We also own the most extensive audio sound files record library in Latvia, where you can find records from 1945. Archives keep ~ 500 000 recordings units, and we do archive digitalising continuously.
Since February 2013 we offer news portal – www.lsm.lv content made by two public service broadcasters: Radio Latvia and Latvian Television News Departments. The portal provides not only news, but also analytical/ investigative journalism publications and PSB journalists’ blogs.
Radio Latvia continues to hold the 1st place within the broadcasting competition with 40 % of listeners (Share %). The total amount of the listeners for Radio Latvia is approximately one million.
