[BNI] owns and/or manages 91 newspapers along with websites, shopping guides and magazines in communities in Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Virginia, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee and Texas. James B. Boone, Jr. [Jim], was the company’s founder and longtime chairman. Boone died in February 2023. Steve Stewart, president and CEO, lives in Smithfield, Virginia. Other key executive personnel live in BNI-served communities. A private company, members of the late Jim Boone’s family control the company. Numerous others associated with BNI own stock or have financial interest in BNI-operated subsidiaries.
