The Academy of Fine Arts and Design of the University of Ljubljana (UL ALUO) is the leading and oldest national university educational institution in fine arts, conservation-restoration and design in Slovenia.
It was established on 27 October 1945 as the ‘Akademija upodabljajočih umetnosti (Academy of Fine Arts – AUU), and the study of painting and sculpture was undertaken there. During its existence, it changed or supplemented its name several times, and it also expanded in accordance with its development. In 1984, the study expanded to industrial design and design of visual communications. More than ten years later, conservation-restoration was added.
The study now takes place in five departments and is conducted in small groups in which an individual approach through consultations, proofreading, discussions and seminars encourages creativity and innovation of students and emphasises the importance and role of our professions in the wider social context. We supplement our studies with theoretical and interdisciplinary contents and technical-technological knowledge.
We are at the top among the members of the University of Ljubljana in terms of the number of international student exchanges, and we regularly connect with Slovenian state and private partners, as well as international partners in order to involve our students in projects, exhibitions, competitions, conferences, etc.
