Founded in 2003, Bristol based charity Temwa has a mission to develop self-sufficient communities in hard-to-reach areas of northern Malawi – itself the third poorest country in the world. We serve the communities of Nkhata Bay North, an extremely isolated and very poor region and home to 55,000 people. Living in villages scattered along the lakeshore and uplands, most of the population can only be reached by foot or boat, and consequently are neglected by limited government services and other NGO support. The majority find it difficult to access education, healthcare jobs and markets. Our aim is to provide an infrastructure to support families in this region facing financial and humanitarian hardship to improve their health and wellbeing and help lift them out of poverty. We accomplish by implementing programmes in health, education, agriculture and forestry.
All of our projects are developed in consultation with the local communities and are delivered by our in-country Temwa team who are Malawi nationals, with many from the local area, and as such they have a deep local and operational knowledge of the needs of Nkhata Bay North so help ensure we are addressing the true needs of the communities we support.
