Nagasaki University is a national university in Japan. Its origin traces back to a series of medical lectures, the first ever given in Japan, delivered by the Dutch Naval doctor J. L. C. Pompe van Meerdervoort in 1857. After experiencing devastation by the atomic bombing, it reopened as a university of 5 faculties and 1 research institute in 1949, in a merger of several educational institutions of different academic disciplines. Today, it comprises 10 faculties, 9 graduate schools, 3 research institutes, and the university hospital which accommodates about 7,500 undergraduate and 1,600 graduate students. About 1,200 academic staff and 2,000 other staff are working for it. In 2020 it set a mission to strive to improve Planetary Health and the current President developed an action plan to further its mission in 2023. The three pillars of this new plan are “Global Health“, “Global Ecology” and “Global Risk”.
