ESSA believes that adopting a mindset rooted in Adaptive Management (AM) can improve how people manage today’s high-stakes environmental and social challenges. We use science and systems thinking to reduce uncertainty, we encourage diverse participatory processes, we focus on those elements that have the most influence on decision making, and we collaboratively guide our clients to make informed decisions. We are passionate about dealing with tough, emerging problems that demand an impartial, thorough evaluation of evidence to create innovative, robust solutions for a more sustainable world. We have found the AM mindset can help in a variety of ways even if only a few steps in the AM loop are completed. Our staff are problem solvers, big-picture thinkers, data driven, creative, rigorous and innovative, driven by an aspiration to become trusted advisers to our clients.
ESSA began in 1979, building on ideas developed at the University of British Columbia about how to creatively apply science and systems thinking to help people tackle complex environmental and social problems. Those ideas coalesced into the concept of Adaptive Environmental Assessment and Management. ESSA has been evolving and applying these ideas for over 40 years to over 2500 projects in over 40 countries across North and South America, Africa, and Asia.
ESSA has a head office in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, with a regional office in Ottawa, Ontario. We employ 30 full-time professional staff and have developed a wide network of associates, partners, and collaborators from around the world.
