The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is a private enterprise owned by the German Government. GIZ implements projects in the field of development cooperation on behalf of its owner - our main commissioning party is the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the European Union and other donors. GIZ is active in over 120 countries worldwide and started operations in Iraq during the humanitarian crisis in 2014 to support refugees, internally displaced people, and their host communities. As a response to the destruction, and loss of economic opportunities and to support the reform process after 2017, GIZ significantly scaled up activities to cover all of Iraq and in various sectors.
Together with our partners, we work flexibly to deliver effective solutions that offer people better prospects and sustainably improve their living conditions and towards a future worth living. Our work focuses on three key areas: Reconstruction, Peacebuilding and Governance as well as Economic Development and Life Perspectives.
To accomplish our goals, GIZ employs a large number of Iraqi and international experts. We also cooperate with local or international civil society and international organisations as well as specialised service providers from the private sector. All our projects are implemented in partnership with the Iraqi Government or the Regional Government of the Kurdistan Region.
The registered offices of GIZ are in Bonn and Eschborn (Germany).
