Rugby Australia was formed in 1949 to give the game a national governing body which represents all levels of Rugby in Australia and across all eight member union states and territories.
The inaugural meeting of the Australian Rugby Football Union was held on November 25 1949 with 11 delegates from New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia, Tasmania and Victoria.
It is a member of the International Rugby Board (IRB) and was established as a company in 1985.
