Several billion people on depend on the ocean for food, and the life in the ocean absorbs 50% of our carbon emissions and 90% of our excess heat, while producing 25% of our oxygen. Yet overfishing, plastic and other pollution, and climate change are choking the life out of the sea. As it suffers, so will we. Conservation has been a successful strategy on land, and the science is clear that it also works in the ocean. There are already many success stories, and there need to be many more if we are to help the oceans to recover. This year the UN signed the “High Seas Treaty”, committing to preserving 30% of the ocean by 2030. Our goal is to support that ambition and help make it a reality by drawing attention to the problem and the opportunity to use Marine Protected Areas to save our oceans, and building a community for change.
