This is the official LinkedIn of the International Modern Pentathlon Union (UIPM). The UIPM was formed on August 3, 1948, at a conference in Sandhurst, Kent, during the London Olympic Games.
The UIPM thus took over governance of the sport from the International Olympic Committee. The following year it adopted competition rules and held the first Modern Pentathlon World Championships in Sweden.
Modern Pentathlon consists of riding, swimming, fencing, shooting and running, so it is a logistically complex proposition both for organisers and competitors. It also has a high-end market position. UIPM is developing a new grass roots structure in a bid to popularise the sport but it is also, by standardising the look and feel of its venues, striving to give its sponsors a new level of brand recognition.
UIPM has been developing various new disciplines aimed at broadening its participation base beyond the five-pronged Olympic format of modern pentathlon. Laser-Run, which consists solely of running and laser shooting, is the latest innovation and is sold as a sport that can be staged in any location, urban or rural, even on a beach.
UIPM is opening up more opportunities for sponsors by creating a more consistent visual identity for the most diverse sport on the Olympic programme.
