The Department of Chemistry is a vibrant network of 30 tenured/tenure-track full-time faculty, two full-time lecturers, 84 graduate teaching assistants and 18 staff who support and mentor more than 150 graduate and 350 undergraduate students. Our Mission: We value quality and integrity in education, mentoring and research excellence while promoting diversity and inclusion. We offer baccalaureate and graduate-level degree programs in chemistry and medicinal chemistry. In addition, we provide training in chemistry to a large number of students in the science, health professions and engineering disciplines, as well as other professional programs. Our Faculty: Chemistry faculty are committed to advancing science through publications, creation of intellectual property, outreach activities, seminars and education of the scientific workforce. These activities require support by external funding. Our faculty stand united in pursuing this funding through individual and multidisciplinary research grants. The faculty will engage in translational research to help increase the economic impact of research on our community. Our Research The department’s primary creative activity is research through both individual faculty effort and synergistic collaborations. The department is focused on exploring the impact of chemical structure on function. We maintain strengths in the core areas of chemistry through the discovery and invention of novel and direct methods and we apply these methods to important multidisciplinary problems in materials science, chemical biology and sustainability. The department is also committed to creating new frontiers of chemical sciences.
