Founded in 2017, UTMIST (University of Toronto Machine Intelligence Student Team) is the largest undergraduate Machine Learning club at the University of Toronto with over 2400 Instagram followers, 2200 + community members on Discord, 8 technical and functional departments, 150+ active volunteers and executives every year including 70+ machine learning developers, making UTMIST one the most influential student societies in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) community.
The ML Projects are the flagship offering at UTMIST, where students can gain part-time project experience. Out of the 12 projects, 4 are collaboratively completed with startups/companies like AltaML and OmniLabs, where we recruited 4-8 ML developers (most from Computer Science, Math, Engineering Science, Statistics, ECE, etc.) to work on projects in their backlogs with ML methods. Students can also propose their own interdisciplinary, research, or applied projects to UTMIST, co-founding their own team of developers.
UTMIST is also well known for its scalable professional initiatives and programs, such as Clear the MIST Mentorship Program 2023 and Hack the MIST Hackathon 2023. Moreover, the Technical Writing Department publishes articles about leading-edge ML topics on UTMIST’s online journal – deMISTify – on Medium, and the Academic Department runs biweekly Study Group, Project Workshop, and Paper Reading Group for ML enthusiasts to join.
Our past members and executives secured job offers and demonstrated excellence at big-brand companies like Intel, Cohere, Amazon AWS, Borealis AI (RBC), Bell, IBM, Tenstorrent, Huawei, Google, Deloitte, TD, Uber, Qualcomm, Restaurant Brands International, and more, as well as top-tier PhD and Master programs worldwide. By joining UTMIST, you can connect with many like-minded students in the field of ML and AI, growing together to land competitive positions and opportunities in the industry or academia.
