Welcome to the Office for Māori Crown Relations - Te Arawhiti (Te Arawhiti).
Te Arawhiti is dedicated to fostering strong, ongoing, and effective relationships with Māori across Government. Our name, Te Arawhiti, means ‘the bridge’. The name symbolises the bridge between Māori and the Crown, the past and the future, and the journey from grievance to partnership.
Our vision: Realising the promise of Te Tiriti o Waitangi/the Treaty of Waitangi for New Zealanders
Our objectives for the Māori Crown Relationship: Restore (whakaora) | Sustain (Whakapūmau) | Grow (Whakatipu) – e ora ai, e pūmau ai, e tipu ai a Aotearoa.
Our priorities:
1. We complete the settlement of all historical Treaty claims
2. We enable the recognition of customary takutai moana legislative rights
3. We enforce requirements on the Crown to meet its Treaty settlement commitments
4. We build the Crown’s capability to engage with Māori and become a better Treaty partner
5. We are the strategic advisor to Cabinet, Ministers, and the public service to enable good policy decisions that uphold Māori rights and interests.
Our values: Mahi Tahi (Working together) | Pono ki te Kaupapa (in good faith) | Atawhaitia (with humility and authenticity)
Our Ministers:
Hon. Tama Potaka - Minister for Māori Crown Relations: Te Arawhiti
Hon. Paul Goldsmith - Minister for Treaty of Waitangi Negotiation
