FUNDAÇÃO PORTUGAL COM ACNUR is a non-governmental organization. Its objectives are to raise awareness and funds to meet the needs of displaced persons and refugees around the world, supporting UNHCR's (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) humanitarian aid programmes: nutrition, medical care, drinking water and sanitation, education, shelter and basic infrastructure, legal assistance and international protection, among others. There are currently around 114 million displaced persons. UNHCR works in 135 countries and is the world's leading agency for the protection of people forced to flee conflict and persecution. Since its creation in 1951, UNHCR has assisted more than 50 million people and has received the Nobel Peace Prize twice, in 1954 and 1981.
