Created in 1996 at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), the Signal Multimedia and Telecommunications Laboratory (SMT), previously part of the Signal Processing Laboratory (LPS), congregates a group of internationally recognized researchers working actively in academic research and education at both graduate (COPPE/UFRJ) and undergraduate (Polytechnic school, Poli/UFRJ) levels, as well as consulting services for the industry.
Its faculty currently includes 4 professors and 3 associate professors, in addition to post-doctoral researchers, graduate, and undergraduate students. The activities carried out in the SMT lab cover a variety of purposes, with main focus on education and research in Electrical Engineering, consulting services for the industry, and knowledge dissemination of modern signal processing tools, both in Brazil and abroad. The main areas of expertise are: communication systems, mobile communications, digital TV, image processing, speech and audio processing, signal detection and estimation, analog and digital signal processing, machine learning, adaptive systems, and distributed processing.
Installed in a spacious facility, the SMT is a well-equipped laboratory. Besides featuring a lecture/presentation room and an acoustic room, it offers comfortable workspace equipped with personal computers interconnected to the SMT domain, and state-of-the-art instrumentation equipment for system development and analysis.
