MISSION
The Northern Ohio Youth Orchestra provides exceptional musical education through a variety of performance opportunities for young musicians of all backgrounds in an inclusive community of learning and growth.
ABOUT US
Now in its 49th season, the Northern Ohio Youth Orchestra has been providing the finest orchestral training to the youth of Northern Ohio since 1969. NOYO is a regional orchestral training program that attracts gifted young musicians, ages 8-22, from Toledo to Cleveland. Its ensembles perform three concerts at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. Based in Oberlin, Ohio, NOYO draws its faculty and coaches from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, one of the nation's most prestigious conservatories.
NOYO's musicians receive excellent education through music from world-class musicians. Its artistic leadership is unparalleled, as its past music directors include Michael Christie, Music Director of the Minnesota Opera; Jeannette Sorrell, Music Director of Apollo’s Fire; John Morris Russell, Conductor of the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra; James Feddeck, Assistant Conductor of the Cleveland Orchestra and Music Director of the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra; and Robert Spano, Music Director of the Atlanta Symphony.
NOYO's ensembles routinely commission and perform new works, offering a unique opportunity for students to make history. The Philharmonia Orchestra has rehearsed and performed side-by-side with many orchestras and youth orchestras, most recently with the Cleveland State University Orchestra and the Kitchener-Waterloo Youth Orchestra in Canada. NOYO has also participated in large-scale, multi-media collaborative performances with the NEOS, the Ohio Dance Theatre, the MAD* Factory, Choral Spectrum, and the Oberlin Choristers.
