Plastic Change is an international organisation based in Denmark. Plastic Change works with research, education, political and public campaigns to raise awareness about the growing plastic pollution in the oceans and the water environment. We collaborate with research institutes, politicians and industry to document the consequenses of the plastic pollution in the oceans and water environments. We work to find sustainalble solutions that changes behaviour and aim to rethink plastic as a valuable ressource that has no place in the oceans and water environment. Plastic Change wants future generations to be able to use and enjoy the oceans without plastic pollution. BACKGROUND Henrik Beha Pedersen initiated Plastic Change after a year of researching, mapping and investigating the issue of plastic pollution in the oceans. It was quite evident that very few was aware of the issue and that common knowledge was extremely limited. With a background in biology, chemistry, NGO lobbying and lots of sailing the oceans Henrik decided that time is now. Somebody needed to raise the rapidly increasing issue of plastic pollution in the ocean. Plastic was invented only 60 years ago. Yearly production amounts to approx.. 300 mill. tones and we only recycle 9%. Estimates already show that plastic pollution, in sizes from few mm to few meters, the size of the African continent is afloat in five large plastic soups. Each year the population of the elegant and huge ocean bird the Albatross eats 5 tones of plastic. And 10 tones of plastic garbage is yearly disposed of in the ocean. Scientific studies are showing that up till 50% of certain food chain fish contain micro plastic in their stomachs. STRATEGY * Research and map the issue of plastic pollution in the oceans * Raise awareness on the political scene * Find ways to use and recycle plastic, so that no plastic is disposed of in the oceans * Create knowledge, increase general awareness and create action
