Dyscover is specialist aphasia support charity, set up in 1994 to meet the needs of people and their families who require both short and long-term support for aphasia, post statutory rehabilitation. We are the only UK provider to offer such a diverse range of services to people with complex aphasia needs and following invitation have presented our work both nationally and internationally.
We run Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) led communication groups to adults with aphasia acquired after Stroke or as part of a rare language dementia called Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA). Dyscover's model of service is based on bringing people with aphasia together and providing skilled therapeutic support to enable social, emotional and functional recovery. Our services are both short and long term and we have different programmes for people at different stages of their recovery. We pride ourselves in that we are often fondly referred to by beneficiaries as the ‘Dyscover family’ because of the friendly, encouraging atmosphere we create.
We actively encourage families to benefit through education and emotional support. We also offer opportunities for beneficiaries to participate in an activities programme which includes accessible sports and creative activities with the aim that beneficiaries will eventually access new activities independently in their own communities.
We rely on a committed and skilled team of volunteers who support every aspect of the organisation with their contributions acknowledged in 2019 with The Queens Award for Voluntary Service.
With our long term experience with people living with aphasia we contribute to research and play an active role within the field by sharing our advances, our consultations with beneficiaries and best practice.
