Minera Skifer is Scandinavia’s leading slate producer with production in Oppdal and Offerdal. Our story goes back hundreds of years and today we produce natural stone of all sizes and finishes, from roofing to bathroom tiles and facade for private and public projects. All production and processing is done by local stonemasons in our production facility close by the slate quarries.
Slate is a building material that nature itself has chosen to produce. Taking its own time, the Earth has pressed sand, clay and gravel together - and transformed it into slate. It was the seabed hundreds of millions of years ago and today we harvest it from the rocks in Oppdal (Norway) and Offerdal (Sweden).
The slate from Minera Skifer is up to 750 million years old. A very great age that means, almost literally, that the slate has extreme properties. You will hardly be able to see the difference, whatever you expose it to. Water, frost, acid and climate changes. It can be difficult to tell whether the slate was laid down two years ago or a century ago. It will still be just as beautiful.
It is a myth that slate is always grey. We can show you the diversity: Oppdal slate is light and discreet. The Offerdal slate has a wonderful surface that reflects light from its surroundings. They have a common denominator despite all of the variations in colour tones, surfaces and geological composition. That is their beautiful looks and extreme qualities as a building material.
A pure natural product with a very short journey to processing in the production hall, with refinement that is mainly performed by human hands. This gives slate a favourable climate footprint even before it reaches the building site. After installation, slate is a building material that is virtually maintenance-free and will be hard-wearing for centuries to come. That is why we say with pride that slate should be the natural choice for anyone who is looking for a hard-wearing, sustainable choice of material.
