Mainstream Energy Solutions Limited (MESL) is the concessionaire of Kainji and Jebba Hydro Power Plants (HPP) with an installed capacity of 760MW and 578.4MW respectively and a total installed capacity of 1338.4MW. The two hydro plants are 100km apart with Kainji dam being on the upstream of Jebba both drawing water from the same source, Niger River.
Upon takeover in November 2013, the total available capacity of the two plants was 582MW. As of today, MESL has proudly restored capacity of up to 922MW over the course of three years. We generate on average 20 percent of Nigeria’s power.
Kainji was commissioned as Nigeria’s first Hydro Power Plant in 1968. Located downstream from Kainji is the Jebba Power Plant which was commissioned in 1985. The turbines in the Power Plants are Kaplan adjustable and fixed blade types.
MESL is a privately-owned company being governed by a Board of Directors and Executive Management that oversee the day to day operations of the plants.
