The Massachusetts Department of Correction has approximately 6,600 inmates in custody. There are 14 facilities with four different security levels: Maximum, Medium, Minimum and Pre-release. The gender breakdown in Massachusetts DOC is 97% male and 3% female. We have approximately 1900 inmates serving a life sentence. We have over 1500 active volunteers at our prisons.
