The American College of the Building Arts provides a unique four-year college experience, training the next generation of artisans by integrating professional training in the building arts with a broad-based liberal arts core curriculum. What does this mean? Well, a lot of good trade schools can teach you how to lay a brick or weld a piece of metal. ACBA students, however, learn so much more. They not only learn how to create beautiful things, they also acquire the broad critical thinking skills that allow them to design as well as build; to be a leader in their trade fields; to understand the context, science and history of their craft; to manage a business; to communicate effectively with clients; and to successfully market their skills. Traditional colleges offer majors such as history or preservation, and while those programs can educate you about these topics, they do not prepare you for an active career actually working hands-on to preserve, restore, rehabilitate or build architecturally significant structures. ACBA trains artisans to foster exceptional craftsmanship and encourage the preservation, enrichment and understanding of the world’s architectural heritage. This combination of education, training, and access to highly experienced faculty is available nowhere else in the United States. ACBA is the only private, 501(c)3 nonprofit, accredited four-year college in the country that awards a BAS (bachelors of applied sciences) in the Traditional Building Arts with seven concentrations: classical architecture and design, architectural stone, architectural carpentry, blacksmithing, preservation masonry, plaster, and timber framing.
